概要: Set shifting とは

定義 definition

Set shifting の定義を色々なところから拾ってみた。

• Set-shifting is the ability to move back and forth between tasks, operations, or mental sets in response to changing goals or environmental experiences. Set-shifting is a function primarily linked to the prefrontal cortex. Studies show difficulties in set-shifting are associated with anorexia nervosa, in particular to childhood perfectionism (4).
• 状況に応じて柔軟に行動を変化させる能力 (2) 。Winconsin card sorting test で検査することができ、prefrontal region の損傷で失われる。

Set-shifting を理解するためには、実験方法から入るのが良さそうである。まずは Winconsin card sorting test と ID/ED set shifting task を読んでほしい。すると、set-shifting には次の 2 つの要素があることがわかる。

1. 逆転学習 reversal learning 。過去の記憶を新しい情報で上書きする作業である。
2. 状況に対して柔軟に行動を変化させるためには、更新された記憶に基づいて新しい行動を起こすことが必要である。

文献 10 では、「逆転学習は simple form of behavioral flexibility entailing shifts between different stimulus - reward associations within a particular dimension 」と表現されている。

Reversal learning には orbitofrontal cortex が、その後の extradimensional shift には prefrontal cortex が密接に関わっている (5)。

Attentional set shifting とは

Attensional set shifting も、なかなかわかりやすい形で定義が論文に書かれていない概念であるが、これは attentional set を切り替える ことである。Attentional set について、わかりやすい英語のページがあったので意訳、転載する (6)。

以下の例では、attentional set を arbitrary internal rules と記述している。

• Attentional set shifting is a measure of cognitive flexibility and executive functions. It refers to the ability to switch between arbitrary internal rules (5).

Set-shifting を検出する実験

ヒトでは、ウィスコンシンカード分類課題と ID/ED set shifting task が方法として確立されている。

一方、齧歯類では広く用いられている方法は無いようであるが、色々な方法が提唱されている。

関係する脳領域

Set-shifting には複数の phase があり、関係する脳の領域が異なる。さらに、ヒトと rodent で位置的な対応と機能的な対応が異なる可能性もあるので注意するべきである。これは、たとえばヒト dorsolateral PFC が rodent medial PFC に機能的に対応しており、ヒト mPFC と書かれているときに混同しないように、ということである。

Rodent

Rodents では、reversal learning には orbitofrontal cortex が、その後の extradimensional shift には medial PFC が関わっている (5,8)。

不明、未整理

Dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) の機能不全との関係が指摘されている (3I)。

病気との関係

多くの病気で、set-shifting impairment が指摘されている。

• 統合失調症 Schizophrenia (3I,9I)
• パーキンソン病 Parkinson's disease (3I)
• うつ病 depression (9I)
• Attention deficit disorder (9I)

メカニズムとしては、逆転学習 reversal learning の不全や PFC-mediated inhibition など多くのケースがあると思われる。
