インド洋から大西洋西部に生息する汽水種で、観賞魚としての人気が高いだけでなく、食べても美味しいことから、養殖方法の開発が進められている。

繁殖期は、基本的に夏季である。地域によって 4 - 8 月 (1, フィリピン。とくに 5 - 7 月が活発)、6 - 8 月 (2, 中国沿岸) など幅がある。写真は このページ より。
