概要: Teaching statement とは

Faculty position に応募する際には、日本でも海外でも、教育に関する意見表明 teaching statement (philosophy という単語が入る場合もある) が要求されることが多い。多くの研究者にとって、これは Research に関するものよりも難しく、何を書いていいのかわからない場合が多いだろう。

これについては、審査する側もうっとおしく思っている (1) ことを理解し、特にユニークさを強調することなく、淡々と書けば良いようだ。文献 1 の要点をまとめてみる。

  • そもそも、応募者にはあまり教育の経験がないのだから、教育の哲学を書かせても仕方ない。
  • Teaching statement はユニークなものである必要はなく、あなたが教育にちゃんと commitment しようとしていることがわかれば良い。
  • Teaching statement を書かせる目的は、よくない応募を振り落とすため である。
    • 少なくとも、応募しようとしている機関に合ったものにすること。
    • 「研究に比べて教育は重要性が低い、自分はやりたくない」という雰囲気を出さないこと。

また、以下のような説明もある。

  • Teaching philosophy statement のコンセプトに、はっきりとした定義はない (3)。応募者が自分の強みを最もよく示すような書類を書けばよい。

以上の点を踏まえて、実際に書く内容について検討する。

文献 2 では、「8 個のありがちな失敗」が挙げられている。これをベースに、Teaching Statement を書く際に注意することをまとめる。

長すぎないように。

  • 1 ページ (1)。しかも、12 pt font で適切な余白を入れて 1 ページ。このサイトの著者は Research Statement も 2 ページ以下を推奨するなど、他のサイトに比べて短めが好きである。
  • 1 - 2 ページ (1)。

You tell a story instead of making statements supported by evidence.
  • このページ (1) はちょっと理解が難しい。おそらく、「単に自分が授業で何をしたか」ではなく「Teaching philosophy のようなものを証拠つきで述べよ」と言っている。例だけでもダメ、哲学だけでもダメということだろう。
  • We want principles of teaching, and evidence that you exemplify these principles in specific classroom goals and practices (1).
  • 全体として general idea for teaching, それを実現するための方法と実例、実際の経験、自分の idea が有効だった証拠、まとめという流れになる (1)。

You express sentiments that are saccharine, obvious and indistinguishable from countless other applicants.
  • 他の候補者と区別がつかない、甘ったるい感情を述べる。正論を吐くことを求められてはいないということだろう。
  • Your teaching philosophy statement is about you, not about some abstract topic (3).
1 You mis-lead your audience.

You are excessively humble, especially if you are female.
  • humble は「謙虚、控えめ」の意味。例えば「授業の準備をすることは、自分にとっても勉強になる」という statement には疑問符がつく。プロフェッショナルとして十分な能力を持っていないと解釈される可能性がある。

You are excessively emotional, especially if you are female.
  • 女性差別のような気がするが、著者も女性である。
  • 悪い例として、"I can't say enough about how much I enjoy..." という文章が挙げられている。確かに、teaching でここまで言うのはかなり嘘くさい。

You fail to link your research and teaching into a single consistent whole.

  • Insuring that students understand foundational concepts.
  • Modeling expert problem solving.
  • Teaching students to work collaboratively.
  • Reduce math or science anxiety.

  • My approach to supervise students is personal and interactive in most situations.

Underrepresented students

どのようにキャンパスの多様化 diversification に貢献するか、underrepresented students をどのように扱うか、などは、移民国家であるアメリカに特有の、しかし重視されるポイントである。これに関係して、ときどき underrpresented という概念が出てくる。

Underrepresented とは、集団内のマイノリティーを示す。多くの場合は人種 race であり、数の少ないアフリカ系アメリカ人、ヒスパニックおよびアジア系アメリカ人などのことである。場合によっては宗教であったり、性別であったりもする。成績が悪い生徒のことを指すことは基本的にない、と某アメリカ人研究者が言っていた。
