このページは、アメリカで職を探す人のための推薦状の書き方ページから分岐したページである。元のページにも Strength や Weakness についての簡潔な説明があるが、このページには文例や具体例などを載せている。

大学、研究所、医学系の企業などを想定している。

企業向けまたは大学院向けの推薦状は、letter 形式でなく、Web 上でいくつかの項目を記入するという形式が多い。Strength はよく記入を求められる項目で、例としては以下のようなものがある (1, 2)。

いずれを挙げるにしても、候補者の具体的なエピソードとともに記載することが望ましい。

Communication	交渉などの対人スキルのみでなく、書類作成 written communication やプレゼンテーションスキルも含む (2)。
Team work	Communication とは別に記載されている (2)。チームとして同僚をリスペクトしたり encourage したりしながら働くスキル。 amiable という言葉も使われる。これは "The amiable personality type is a very patient and well-balanced individual. They're quiet but witty. They're very sympathetic, kind, and inoffensive—amiables do not like to offend people. An amiable is easy going and everybody likes the amiables と説明される。 amiable に似た意味の genial という言葉もある。"a genial member" は 875 件ヒット (Nov 2018)。
Manage, planning, organize	Time management, prioritizing, meeting deadlines, optimal use of available resources など (2)。マネージメント職に応募するならぜひ推したい点だ。
Flexibility	職の内容が変わるなら、flexibility/adaptability に言及するのが良いだろう。 Willing to learn new skills and knowledge, able to work and communicate effectively with diverse people など (2)。文例 Such flexibility will help her to adopt new situations.
Problem solving	問題解決能力。研究者に欲しいスキルか。
Coaching, mentoring	学校の先生、上司などに欲しいスキル。 Willing and able to coach others, assess training and learning need など (2)。

ほか、survey で挙げられることの多い項目を記しておく。上の表と重複があるかもしれないが、とりあえずリストに。

上にあげた strengths も、状況に応じては weaknesses になる。よって「候補者には weakness はない」と言うのは得策でない (1)。実際問題として weakness のない人間というのは不自然であり、推薦状の内容自体に疑いをもたれるためである。

良い推薦状では、weakness を記載するふりをして strength を記載することが求められる。strength が状況に応じて weakness になるならば、逆も然りという考え方である。

「候補者と推薦者が一緒に働いていた環境では、候補者の・・という点が weakness だった。しかし、これはあなたの会社では strength として働くだろう」と書けるポイントを見つけるのが良い推薦者である。

Weakness の実例を示す (1)。

Procrastination	締め切りを守れない、締め切り直前に集中してやろうとするなど (3)。
Impatiance	他の人のミスや仕事の遅さを受け入れられない (3)。
Reluctance to delegate tasks	Reluctance は「気が進まないこと」または物理分野では磁気抵抗。Delegate は「委任する」。つまり「人に仕事を任せるのが苦手」という意味 (3)。
Unassertive	付和雷同というか、自己主張がないという意味のようだ。例としては、他の人の意見に (本当は反対なのに) 賛成する、No と言えないなど (3)。
Cautious	臆病、注意深すぎる、チャレンジしない (3)。
Uncompromissing, stubborn	Inflexilibity, 自分の考えに固執する (3)。
Strong willed/controlling	視野が狭い、自己中心的、他の人をコントロールしようとする (3)。
Talkative	仕事に集中せず、雑談が多く時間を無駄にする (3)。
